Planners
Andres Duany is and architect and town planner whose work focuses on the creation of community. He and his wife, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, founded their practice in 1980, at the time of their design of Seaside, Florida, which began an ongoing debate on the alternative to suburban sprawl. Their success has brought acclaim and their firm has fortunately influenced the practice and direction of town and urban planning in the United States. With a staff of over forty, DPZ has planned over 200 new towns and revitalization projects both here and abroad. Both Andres and Elizabeth studied at the Princeton School of Architecture before receiving their graduate degrees from the Yale School of Architecture. Both partners are involved in the teaching of Traditional Town Planning at the University of Miami, where Elizabeth is Dean of the School of Architecture. Andres lectures extensively across the United States and abroad about his concern for urban problems and suburban sprawl. Their new book, Suburban Nation, describes these problems and proposes practical solutions. As the first traditional town to be built in the United States since World War II, Time Magazine featured Seaside as one of the Best of the Decade. The firm has been featured in other national media such as NBC News and ABC News, as well as many other publications including: Newsweek, The New York Times, Washington Post and major professional magazines.
