Regional Healthcare

Greenwood, South Carolina is home to impressive healthcare facilities. Its residents have access to both Self Regional Healthcare and the Greenwood Genetic Center.

Self Regional Heathcare - A 421 bed regional referral center with nearly every major medical and surgical specialty. Just five minutes from home is "Big City" health care.

Maxwell Springs is conveniently located approximately five minutes from Self Regional Healthcare, a regionally recognized medical facility serving several counties in western South Carolina. With 140 physicians, every major medical and surgical specialty is represented at this 421 bed hospital which employs over 1,800 individuals.

Since it is a regional referral center, Self Regional has a high tech ICU and Cardiac Rehabilitation, Radiation Therapy, CT and MRI, and an impatient mental health unit.

Self Regional, however, has some features that are unusual even for a such a referral center, a unit for peripheral vascular surgery, an accredited children's sleep disorder center, a 24-bed chemical dependency unit, and medical library that serves a nine county region are only a few of the unusual features of this health care facility. As a teaching hospital, Self Regional works with The Montgomery Family Practice Center, which offers a three-year postgraduate medical residency program in family medicine.

October of 2001 saw Self Regional Healthcare continue its contribution to advancing medical care for the community when it opened its new open-heart center. Diagnostic and interventional cardiac catherization, beating heart surgery, and robotic assisted surgery are available in the state of the art facility. The hospital now has advanced technology unavailable to date in the Southeast.

Internationally known for its research in birth defects and other genetic disorders, the Greenwood Genetic Center serves approximately 5,000 patients annually. Research explores the causes, treatment, and prevention of birth defects and mental retardation. During the Festival of flowers each year in June the Center hosts an international conference.

These two institutions are excellent examples of the spirit of community, which is so prevalent in Greenwood. Both Self Regional Healthcare and the Greenwood Genetic Center owe their development to the vision of the J.C. Self Family of Greenwood. Industrialist J. C. Self once called the hospital a "debt of gratitude to the community that has been good to me." His words of sincerity epitomize the sense of caring stewardship which makes Greenwood such a special community.

Each fall this stewardshp is also evident in the "Wellness Celebration" sponsored by Self Regional, the Chamber of Commerce, and other organizations. Approximately 7,500 citizens participate in over 130 interactive displays during the one day event. Free blood pressure and glaucoma screening as well as free spinal and cholesterol checks are provided by volunteers from the medical community.

Maxwell Springs is a traditional neighborhood located within a community that, according to Toni Hubbard of the Chamber, cares about the "Four Corners of Wellness: economic, physical, family/spiritual, and community."
